This is one of the most delightful science kits (one of three new Crayola STEAM lab kits) we have encountered to date and one that children relish exploring. That appeal stems, in part, from the almost startling beauty of the paper flowers kids make, colorful, delicate-looking blossoms so vivid they might have sprung from a real garden. The process is simple enough that youngsters can do it without supervision and get great results every time. And then there's the awe-inspiring transformation that occurs once little scientists have completed a bit of prep work and it's time to water the flower. At this point kids will already have added drops of color to the bottom of the clear, plastic pot in which the flower is nestled. Once water is added, the liquid climbs its way up the 'stem' through the magic of capillary action and, within minutes, begins infusing the petals with vibrant, nuanced color. There are enough supplies to make 12 flowers that can 're-wick' repeatedly for different colors and designs. In addition to the flower-making process, the easy-to-follow instructions also incorporate 4 fun hands-on experiments that prompt kids to carefully observe and make note of the fascinating results.
